Hey David; there isn't a way to splice chains, so your current ones will have to be cut off. As for adding new ones, if there isn't room for a shackle, would it be okay if the chains were a bit longer than 35 inches? If you hadn't been doing so, crossing the chains under the coupler may be a way to use longer chains without them dragging. That way you could use S-hooks to more easily attach the chains. If so you can use the 5,000 lb (per chain) rated Curt Safety Chain with S-Hooks # C80031.

That is a super frustrating story. There isn't really a great way to lock the Demco coupler part # DM14040-81 to a trailer but a better option might be a wheel lock like the part # 288-02020 which would at as a theft deterrant.

If your currently have just the Stealth Hitches Hidden Rack Receiver # SH66VR then you would need to get the # 391CONVD5 in order to tow a trailer. The receiver tube included with the # SH66VR is not for use with ball mounts, only the ball mount shank included in # 391CONVD5 is rated for trailer towing. I do not see anywhere that you would be able to use a screw driver on the Atwood 84132 to activate the actuator. Instead you could simply use a 2"x4" as in the image below with the safety chains. Then when you push the top of the board in it would activate the actuator. view full answer...
